Metallica! Metallica! Metallica!

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

One of the amazing things we’ve noticed here in Costa Rica, is the HUGE heavy metal following.  John and I have never been the biggest Bangers on the block, but we do appreciate some metals bands and we have really learned to cultivate a further love for this genre of music during our travels here in Costa Rica.  This is the story of our very first heavy metal concert.

(We went to see Metallica and all we got were these T-shirts!)

The Bird Bug.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I try not to talk about the insect situation in the tropical = massive insect infestation sunny lands of the otherwise beautiful country of Costa Rica. But I just can’t hold back any longer!

You know how you can pretend things aren’t there if you can ignore them?  Well there is NO WAY you can ignore a friggin’ BIRD BUG.

A few weeks ago, John and I were innocently minding our own business, working in our living/dining room when all of all sudden…

I look up from my laptop and ask John, “What the F was that???”

John looked up from his laptop and replied, “I dunno, isn’t it kind of late for people to be drilling or running machinery?”

I replied, “I dunno, that sounded more like a machine gun.”

Then we heard it again.

It was coming from our living room window.  So I cautiously walked over to to find the Bird Bug flapping it’s wings.

We Went to Panama and All We Got Were These Masks/Hats!

Patty and John Panama Masks

For Christmas 2009 we went to Panama City, Panama to explore Central America some more.  And while Panama City was absolutely beautiful, we learned a huge travel tip in this experience.

TIP: Check another place’s Christmas schedule BEFORE you decide to go away for the holidays.  We were silly and checked AFTER the fact, only to realize that mostly everything would be closed for the Christmas Holidays!

Hence us not having all to much to do except model our awesome Embera mask finds.  You’d be surprise at how diverse and entertaining masks can be when you have some idle time to pass!

Luckily it wasn’t a complete disaster and we just wouldn’t be “us” if we didn’t have more stories to follow.  Stay tuned…

Raise Your Very Own Backyard Tico Chicks!

costa rica chickens

One of the most endearing sights in Costa Rica are all the animals that roam freely around people’s yards and properties.  In fact, our friend Erich actually has a rooster and a chicken which his family keep as pets.

They really are the sweetest birds I’ve ever met. During a previous get-together, Erich and I named the pair Angel and Alonzo ;-)

Angel and Alonzo are mated and paired together for life.  They take care of each other and love each other dearly.  They follow each other around everywhere and make sure that the other is ok at all times.

They sleep together and eat together, and when Angel the chicken is ready to lay her eggs, Alonzo the rooster flits about getting hay and straw in one area for Angel to rest on.  It’s just too cute!

In all seriousness, who knew chickens could make such great pets?  :D

How Not to Lose Your Head.

Monday, March 8th, 2010

You know that warning sign you see on vehicles now and again?  You know, the one that tells you to please keep all your limbs inside your vehicle – well I almost forgot to count my head as a “limb”…:D

Sept-Oct 2009 007 - 3

I don’t think this is a Costa Rican thing.  This is really just a common sense life thing that you should never forget, even if you are really excited in a new place and wanting to soak in all the sights around you.   Remember to keep ALL your body parts and valuables inside your vehicle.

The Central Market – On Your Mark, Get Set…GO!!!

Mercado Central - Downtown San Jose - Costa Rica

The Central Market in Downtown San Jose, Costa Rica is an absolute maze of consumer and material delights. You can find almost anything here and at great prices too.  Every corner and every turn is a new sight, new smell and new find.

This only looks like one big mess of things up for sale, but upon closer investigation  there is a certain logic and order in place.  And bargains are abound to be found in this wonderful area of downtown San Jose.

Located by the Avdas. Central and 1 and Cs. 6 and 8 Barrio La Merced – it’s always worth checking out this vibrant and busy street market.
